The first time I went to the theatre: The first time I remember going to the theatre was to the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh to see Cinderella Pantomime with my school. Theatre wasn’t really a thing my parents and I could afford and it was not a possibility in their own upbringing, so it was a novelty to me until the age of 16. I remember thinking how much I wanted to dress up and sing on stage watching the pantomimes. I think I was about 6 years old when I first went, and there was a person dressed as a full human size mouse costume that has haunted my dreams ever since. Although, luckily it seems to not have deterred me from theatre!
The last time I went to the theatre before lockdown: The last show I saw before lockdown was ’The Lion King’ at the Edinburgh Playhouse where I work in the box office to accompany my work as a freelance director. It was one of the first films I saw in the cinema with my parents as a child and the music, the story and the whole theatricality moved me to tears just as it did when I was a child. I had planned to take my parents to see it which would have made a lovely full circle experience (pardon the pun - Circle of Life), but unfortunately never got the chance to. Funnily there were people dressed as animals in human size costumes with some scary music, but I managed to cope (only just). What is it with me and people in animal costumes?!
The seat history: My seat is a rehearsal stool I use, and has appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. It is currently adapting, as we all are, showcasing my plant behind a different set of curtains to a different kind of audience. I hope that it will get the chance to be on stage doing the real thing again soon.
