This little chair sits on stage waiting for some live performers, it was designed in association with Santa, and during lockdown has proved to become a thriving stage with colourful shows by unicorns, dancing horses, and as you can see from the photo, very busy audiences...
It shows the potential of children's imagination to thrive in challenging and unpredictable times, but also as theatre makers, how much we are missing the hustle and bustle of live theatre, seeing performers on stage, the energy and vitality in the theatre.
My first memories of live theatre was probably more as a maker than actually seeing shows, an opportunity to work as a set designer by a supportive teacher on a school production, and making a prop car for a version of Grease! A first taste of set making and painting that has kept calling me back over the years despite forays into many other creative experiences.
The last work I was involved in before lockdown was a research process in Amsterdam, researching an early years project integrating design, dance, live film and improvisation, sharing the results of some research to families in a beautiful modern theatre in Almere, near Amsterdam, and towards festival presentations in the spring in Paris and Amsterdam.
